Carlos Saavedra | December 29 2011 | Category: Press Releases | Comments
Kitchener, December 29th, 2011 – Chicopee Ski Club officially opened its 2012 Winter Season today with an exciting ribbon cutting ceremony for its new Quad chair lift on the North Hill. The unique event was greeted with roars of excitement and applause from the crowd who gathered at the base of hill to celebrate this historic moment.
The ribbon cutting featured a variety of Club Members, Management and Board personnel, community members and business owners who ‘”sponsored a chair” by purchasing large decals
that were applied to the back of each chair and ready for each sponsor to ride today. To sponsor a chair at Chicopee, it costs only $500 per year for 5 years and will last the lifetime of the lift
(estimated at 25 years).
The ribbon was officially cut at 8:15 a.m. by President of the Board Richard Parent, Executive Director Bill Creighton and the winner of Chicopee’s “Ribbon Cutting Contest” – Tanya Ibbotson, of Waterloo, accompanied by her daughter Aurora and son Hunter .
All chair sponsors were the first to ride the lift on their own chair followed by Management and Board Members. The general public followed with great excitement and anticipation. The event was capped off with a VIP reception in the Silvertip Lounge. Chicopee will continue the celebration into New Year’s this weekend where they will be the only venue to host two amazing fireworks shows plus live music, skiing, boarding and a variety of fun family activities.

Chicopee still waiting for snow to open
Carlos Saavedra | December 21 2011 | Category: Press Releases | Comments
Kitchener, December 20th, 2011 – Chicopee Ski Club is waiting patiently for colder weather before it can open for the season. “Unfortunately the forecast is not looking favourable over the next 10 days for snow or snowmaking conditions” states Bill Creighton, Executive Director and COO. “We’re trying everything we can to open as soon as possible. We’ve already dumped about 2-1/2 million gallons of snow on the hill in the past two weeks, but the temperatures are on a roller coaster ride. As soon as we make it, we start losing it.”
Chicopee had originally planned to open on December 16th with a major community event and Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for its new Quad lift. When Management reviewed the conditions and forecast last week, a decision was made to delay the opening to this week (Dec. 22nd), weather permitting. Early this morning, the state of the hill was reviewed and as the pictures indicate, there is not enough snow to open even one run. In terms of snowmaking, the rule of thumb is that temperatures need to stay at a minimum of -4 degrees for a few days. “Right now we’re lucky to be getting one to two nights in a row at those levels” states Creighton.
Chicopee is encouraging everyone to check their website regularly for updates regarding Season Opening. The Club has confirmed that it will be open for its annual New Year’s Eve Bash regardless of weather conditions complete with fireworks, family activities and live entertainment.

Season Opening and Ribbon Cutting Ceremony
Carlos Saavedra | November 24 2011 | Category: Press Releases | Comments
Kitchener, ON, November 24, 2011 – Chicopee Ski Club is proud to announce the beginning of a brand new era for skiers and snowboarders in the Tri-City area with the launch of its new quad chair lift on the North Hill – a project that cost $1.5 million. “This is only the first step of many designed to upgrade and extend existing facilities under Vision 2020 – Chicopee’s 10-year strategic plan” states Bill Creighton, Executive Director of Chicopee.
This new lift will be able to bring up to 2,400 people per hour to the top of the hill and will make its official debut at a special ribbon cutting ceremony on December 16th, 2011. This is the date set for Chicopee’s action packed Season Opening – an event you won’t want to miss! Not only will Chicopee be providing FREE skiing and snowboarding, it will feature special presentations from community dignitaries and sponsors, great music, entertainment, prizes, and of course, the first ride to the top!
To make this event even more exciting, Chicopee is offering something special to the community – the opportunity to buy a chair on our new North Quad Chair Lift and actually ride your chair at its inaugural run on the 16th. This is rare indeed – an opportunity for you to place your name (or your organization’s name) on a chair for all to see. With the life of our chair expected to be 25 years, that’s a lot of exposure and a great way to establish your personal legacy with the club.
Chicopee Ski Club is a not-for-profit organization and has over 2500 members. It is governed by a volunteer board of directors and run by a multi business-unit Management Team. “Chicopee has always sought to serve the public first by offering affordable and accessible outdoor activities, programs and lessons to local people” adds Creighton. Recently in May of 2011, Chicopee was honoured with an award from the Kitchener Sport Association for “the organization demonstrating outstanding leadership, excellence and influence to the sporting community”. The Club also hosted a unique dedication ceremony in June 2011 where Kelly Vanderbeek was recognized as a “Lifetime Honourary Member of Chicopee” and was awarded a chair from the original North Lift that will remain on-site as a representation of her success and contributions to the sport of skiing.
