Chicopee still waiting for snow to open

Kitchener, December 20th, 2011 – Chicopee Ski Club is waiting patiently for colder weather before it can open for the season. “Unfortunately the forecast is not looking favourable over the next 10 days for snow or snowmaking conditions” states Bill Creighton, Executive Director and COO. “We’re trying everything we can to open as soon as possible. We’ve already dumped about 2-1/2 million gallons of snow on the hill in the past two weeks, but the temperatures are on a roller coaster ride. As soon as we make it, we start losing it.”
Chicopee had originally planned to open on December 16th with a major community event and Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for its new Quad lift. When Management reviewed the conditions and forecast last week, a decision was made to delay the opening to this week (Dec. 22nd), weather permitting. Early this morning, the state of the hill was reviewed and as the pictures indicate, there is not enough snow to open even one run. In terms of snowmaking, the rule of thumb is that temperatures need to stay at a minimum of -4 degrees for a few days. “Right now we’re lucky to be getting one to two nights in a row at those levels” states Creighton.
Chicopee is encouraging everyone to check their website regularly for updates regarding Season Opening. The Club has confirmed that it will be open for its annual New Year’s Eve Bash regardless of weather conditions complete with fireworks, family activities and live entertainment.
